He Frowned

In the name of GOD, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

bis'mi l-lahi l-raḥmāni l-raḥīm

He (Muhammad) frowned and turned away.

عَبَسَ وَتَوَلَّىٰٓ

abasa watawalla

When the blind man came to him.

أَن جَآءَهُ ٱلْأَعْمَىٰ

an jāahu l-aʿm

How do you know? He may purify himself.

وَمَا يُدْرِيكَ لَعَلَّهُۥ يَزَّكَّىٰٓ

wamā yud'rīka laʿallahu yazzakk

Or he may take heed, and benefit from the message.

أَوْ يَذَّكَّرُ فَتَنفَعَهُ ٱلذِّكْرَىٰٓ

aw yadhakkaru fatanfaʿahu l-dhik'r

As for the rich man.

أَمَّا مَنِ ٱسْتَغْنَىٰ

ammā mani is'taghn

You gave him your attention.

فَأَنتَ لَهُۥ تَصَدَّىٰ

fa-anta lahu taṣadd

Even though you could not guarantee his salvation.

وَمَا عَلَيْكَ أَلَّا يَزَّكَّىٰ

wamā ʿalayka allā yazzakk

The one who came to you eagerly.

وَأَمَّا مَن جَآءَكَ يَسْعَىٰ

wa-ammā man jāaka yasʿ

And is really reverent.

وَهُوَ يَخْشَىٰ

wahuwa yakhsh

You ignored him.

فَأَنتَ عَنْهُ تَلَهَّىٰ

fa-anta ʿanhu talahh

Indeed, this is a reminder.

كَلَّآ إِنَّهَا تَذْكِرَةٌ

kallā innahā tadhkiratu

Whoever wills shall take heed.

فَمَن شَآءَ ذَكَرَهُۥ

faman shāa dhakarah

In honorable scriptures.

فِى صُحُفٍ مُّكَرَّمَةٍ

fī ṣuḥufin mukarramati

Exalted and pure.

مَّرْفُوعَةٍ مُّطَهَّرَةٍۭ

marfūʿatin muṭahharati

(Written) by the hands of messengers.

بِأَيْدِى سَفَرَةٍ

bi-aydī safarati

Who are honorable and righteous.

كِرَامٍۭ بَرَرَةٍ

kirāmin bararati

Woe to the human being; he is so unappreciative!

قُتِلَ ٱلْإِنسَٰنُ مَآ أَكْفَرَهُۥ

qutila l-insānu mā akfarah

What did He create him from?

مِنْ أَىِّ شَىْءٍ خَلَقَهُۥ

min ayyi shayin khalaqah

From a tiny drop, He creates him and designs him.

مِن نُّطْفَةٍ خَلَقَهُۥ فَقَدَّرَهُۥ

min nuṭ'fatin khalaqahu faqaddarah

Then He points out the path for him.

ثُمَّ ٱلسَّبِيلَ يَسَّرَهُۥ

thumma l-sabīla yassarah

Then He puts him to death, and into the grave.

ثُمَّ أَمَاتَهُۥ فَأَقْبَرَهُۥ

thumma amātahu fa-aqbarah

When He wills, He resurrects him.

ثُمَّ إِذَا شَآءَ أَنشَرَهُۥ

thumma idhā shāa ansharah

He shall uphold His commandments.

كَلَّا لَمَّا يَقْضِ مَآ أَمَرَهُۥ

kallā lammā yaqḍi mā amarah

Let the human consider his food!

فَلْيَنظُرِ ٱلْإِنسَٰنُ إِلَىٰ طَعَامِهِۦٓ

falyanẓuri l-insānu ilā ṭaʿāmih

We pour the water generously.

أَنَّا صَبَبْنَا ٱلْمَآءَ صَبًّا

annā ṣababnā l-māa ṣabba

Then we split the soil open.

ثُمَّ شَقَقْنَا ٱلْأَرْضَ شَقًّا

thumma shaqaqnā l-arḍa shaqqa

We grow in it grains.

فَأَنۢبَتْنَا فِيهَا حَبًّا

fa-anbatnā fīhā ḥabba

Grapes and pasture.

وَعِنَبًا وَقَضْبًا

waʿinaban waqaḍba

Olives and palms.

وَزَيْتُونًا وَنَخْلًا

wazaytūnan wanakhla

A variety of orchards.

وَحَدَآئِقَ غُلْبًا

waḥadāiqa ghul'ba

Fruits and vegetables.

وَفَٰكِهَةً وَأَبًّا

wafākihatan wa-abba

To provide life support for you and your animals.

مَّتَٰعًا لَّكُمْ وَلِأَنْعَٰمِكُمْ

matāʿan lakum wali-anʿāmiku

Then, when the blow comes to pass.

فَإِذَا جَآءَتِ ٱلصَّآخَّةُ

fa-idhā jāati l-ṣākhat

That is the day when one flees from his brother.

يَوْمَ يَفِرُّ ٱلْمَرْءُ مِنْ أَخِيهِ

yawma yafirru l-maru min akhīh

From his mother and father.

وَأُمِّهِۦ وَأَبِيهِ

wa-ummihi wa-abīh

From his spouse and children.

وَصَٰحِبَتِهِۦ وَبَنِيهِ

waṣāḥibatihi wabanīh

Each one of them, on that day, worries about his own destiny.

لِكُلِّ ٱمْرِئٍ مِّنْهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ شَأْنٌ يُغْنِيهِ

likulli im'ri-in min'hum yawma-idhin shanun yugh'nīh

Some faces on that day will be happy.

وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ مُّسْفِرَةٌ

wujūhun yawma-idhin mus'firatu

Laughing and joyful.

ضَاحِكَةٌ مُّسْتَبْشِرَةٌ

ḍāḥikatun mus'tabshiratu

Other faces, on that day, will be covered with misery.

وَوُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ عَلَيْهَا غَبَرَةٌ

wawujūhun yawma-idhin ʿalayhā ghabaratu

Overwhelmed by remorse.

تَرْهَقُهَا قَتَرَةٌ

tarhaquhā qataratu

These are the wicked disbelievers.

أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْكَفَرَةُ ٱلْفَجَرَةُ

ulāika humu l-kafaratu l-fajarat
