Dawn

In the name of GOD, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

bis'mi l-lahi l-raḥmāni l-raḥīm

By the dawn.

وَٱلْفَجْرِ

wal-fajr

And the ten nights.

وَلَيَالٍ عَشْرٍ

walayālin ʿashri

By the even and the odd.

وَٱلشَّفْعِ وَٱلْوَتْرِ

wal-shafʿi wal-watr

By the night as it passes.

وَٱلَّيْلِ إِذَا يَسْرِ

wa-al-layli idhā yasr

A profound oath, for one who possesses intelligence.

هَلْ فِى ذَٰلِكَ قَسَمٌ لِّذِى حِجْرٍ

hal fī dhālika qasamun lidhī ḥij'ri

Have you noted what your Lord did to 'Ãd?

أَلَمْ تَرَ كَيْفَ فَعَلَ رَبُّكَ بِعَادٍ

alam tara kayfa faʿala rabbuka biʿādi

Erum; the town with tall buildings.

إِرَمَ ذَاتِ ٱلْعِمَادِ

irama dhāti l-ʿimād

There was nothing like it anywhere.

ٱلَّتِى لَمْ يُخْلَقْ مِثْلُهَا فِى ٱلْبِلَٰدِ

allatī lam yukh'laq mith'luhā fī l-bilād

Also Thamûd, who carved the rocks in their valley.

وَثَمُودَ ٱلَّذِينَ جَابُوا۟ ٱلصَّخْرَ بِٱلْوَادِ

wathamūda alladhīna jābū l-ṣakhra bil-wād

And Pharaoh who possessed might.

وَفِرْعَوْنَ ذِى ٱلْأَوْتَادِ

wafir'ʿawna dhī l-awtād

They all transgressed in the land.

ٱلَّذِينَ طَغَوْا۟ فِى ٱلْبِلَٰدِ

alladhīna ṭaghaw fī l-bilād

They spread evil throughout.

فَأَكْثَرُوا۟ فِيهَا ٱلْفَسَادَ

fa-aktharū fīhā l-fasād

Consequently, your Lord poured upon them a whipping retribution.

فَصَبَّ عَلَيْهِمْ رَبُّكَ سَوْطَ عَذَابٍ

faṣabba ʿalayhim rabbuka sawṭa ʿadhābi

Your Lord is ever watchful.

إِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَبِٱلْمِرْصَادِ

inna rabbaka labil-mir'ṣād

When the human being is tested by his Lord, through blessings and joy, he says, "My Lord is generous towards me."

فَأَمَّا ٱلْإِنسَٰنُ إِذَا مَا ٱبْتَلَىٰهُ رَبُّهُۥ فَأَكْرَمَهُۥ وَنَعَّمَهُۥ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّىٓ أَكْرَمَنِ

fa-ammā l-insānu idhā mā ib'talāhu rabbuhu fa-akramahu wanaʿʿamahu fayaqūlu rabbī akraman

But if He tests him through reduction in provisions, he says, "My Lord is humiliating me!"

وَأَمَّآ إِذَا مَا ٱبْتَلَىٰهُ فَقَدَرَ عَلَيْهِ رِزْقَهُۥ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّىٓ أَهَٰنَنِ

wa-ammā idhā mā ib'talāhu faqadara ʿalayhi riz'qahu fayaqūlu rabbī ahānan

Wrong! It is you who brought it on yourselves by not regarding the orphan.

كَلَّا بَل لَّا تُكْرِمُونَ ٱلْيَتِيمَ

kallā bal lā tuk'rimūna l-yatīm

And not advocating charity towards the poor.

وَلَا تَحَٰٓضُّونَ عَلَىٰ طَعَامِ ٱلْمِسْكِينِ

walā taḥāḍḍūna ʿalā ṭaʿāmi l-mis'kīn

And consuming the inheritance of helpless orphans.

وَتَأْكُلُونَ ٱلتُّرَاثَ أَكْلًا لَّمًّا

watakulūna l-turātha aklan lamma

And loving the money too much.

وَتُحِبُّونَ ٱلْمَالَ حُبًّا جَمًّا

watuḥibbūna l-māla ḥubban jamma

Indeed, when the earth is crushed, utterly crushed.

كَلَّآ إِذَا دُكَّتِ ٱلْأَرْضُ دَكًّا دَكًّا

kallā idhā dukkati l-arḍu dakkan dakka

And your Lord comes, together with the angels in row after row.

وَجَآءَ رَبُّكَ وَٱلْمَلَكُ صَفًّا صَفًّا

wajāa rabbuka wal-malaku ṣaffan ṣaffa

On that day, Gehenna will be brought forth. On that day, the human being will remember—but what a remembrance—it will be too late.

وَجِا۟ىٓءَ يَوْمَئِذٍۭ بِجَهَنَّمَ يَوْمَئِذٍ يَتَذَكَّرُ ٱلْإِنسَٰنُ وَأَنَّىٰ لَهُ ٱلذِّكْرَىٰ

wajīa yawma-idhin bijahannama yawma-idhin yatadhakkaru l-insānu wa-annā lahu l-dhik'r

He will say, "Oh, I wish I prepared for my (eternal) life."

يَقُولُ يَٰلَيْتَنِى قَدَّمْتُ لِحَيَاتِى

yaqūlu yālaytanī qaddamtu liḥayāt

On that day, no retribution could be worse than His retribution.

فَيَوْمَئِذٍ لَّا يُعَذِّبُ عَذَابَهُۥٓ أَحَدٌ

fayawma-idhin lā yuʿadhibu ʿadhābahu aḥadu

And no confinement is as effective as His confinement.

وَلَا يُوثِقُ وَثَاقَهُۥٓ أَحَدٌ

walā yūthiqu wathāqahu aḥadu

As for you, O content soul.

يَٰٓأَيَّتُهَا ٱلنَّفْسُ ٱلْمُطْمَئِنَّةُ

yāayyatuhā l-nafsu l-muṭ'ma-inat

Return to your Lord, pleased and pleasing.

ٱرْجِعِىٓ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكِ رَاضِيَةً مَّرْضِيَّةً

ir'jiʿī ilā rabbiki rāḍiyatan marḍiyyata

Welcome into My servants.

فَٱدْخُلِى فِى عِبَٰدِى

fa-ud'khulī fī ʿibād

Welcome into My Paradise.

وَٱدْخُلِى جَنَّتِى

wa-ud'khulī jannat
