The Sun

In the name of GOD, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

bis'mi l-lahi l-raḥmāni l-raḥīm

By the sun and its brightness.

وَٱلشَّمْسِ وَضُحَىٰهَا

wal-shamsi waḍuḥāh

The moon that follows it.

وَٱلْقَمَرِ إِذَا تَلَىٰهَا

wal-qamari idhā talāh

The day that reveals.

وَٱلنَّهَارِ إِذَا جَلَّىٰهَا

wal-nahāri idhā jallāh

The night that covers.

وَٱلَّيْلِ إِذَا يَغْشَىٰهَا

wa-al-layli idhā yaghshāh

The sky and Him who built it.

وَٱلسَّمَآءِ وَمَا بَنَىٰهَا

wal-samāi wamā banāh

The earth and Him who sustains it.

وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَمَا طَحَىٰهَا

wal-arḍi wamā ṭaḥāh

The soul and Him who created it.

وَنَفْسٍ وَمَا سَوَّىٰهَا

wanafsin wamā sawwāh

Then showed it what is evil and what is good.

فَأَلْهَمَهَا فُجُورَهَا وَتَقْوَىٰهَا

fa-alhamahā fujūrahā wataqwāh

Successful is one who redeems it.

قَدْ أَفْلَحَ مَن زَكَّىٰهَا

qad aflaḥa man zakkāh

Failing is one who neglects it.

وَقَدْ خَابَ مَن دَسَّىٰهَا

waqad khāba man dassāh

Thamûd's disbelief caused them to transgress.

كَذَّبَتْ ثَمُودُ بِطَغْوَىٰهَآ

kadhabat thamūdu biṭaghwāh

They followed the worst among them.

إِذِ ٱنۢبَعَثَ أَشْقَىٰهَا

idhi inbaʿatha ashqāh

GOD's messenger said to them, "This is GOD's camel; let her drink."

فَقَالَ لَهُمْ رَسُولُ ٱللَّهِ نَاقَةَ ٱللَّهِ وَسُقْيَٰهَا

faqāla lahum rasūlu l-lahi nāqata l-lahi wasuq'yāh

They disbelieved him and slaughtered her. Their Lord then requited them for their sin and annihilated them.

فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَعَقَرُوهَا فَدَمْدَمَ عَلَيْهِمْ رَبُّهُم بِذَنۢبِهِمْ فَسَوَّىٰهَا

fakadhabūhu faʿaqarūhā fadamdama ʿalayhim rabbuhum bidhanbihim fasawwāh

Yet, those who came after them remain heedless.

وَلَا يَخَافُ عُقْبَٰهَا

walā yakhāfu ʿuq'bāh
