The Night

In the name of GOD, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

bis'mi l-lahi l-raḥmāni l-raḥīm

By the night as it covers.

وَٱلَّيْلِ إِذَا يَغْشَىٰ

wa-al-layli idhā yaghsh

The day as it reveals.

وَٱلنَّهَارِ إِذَا تَجَلَّىٰ

wal-nahāri idhā tajall

And Him who created the male and the female.

وَمَا خَلَقَ ٱلذَّكَرَ وَٱلْأُنثَىٰٓ

wamā khalaqa l-dhakara wal-unth

Your works are of various kinds.

إِنَّ سَعْيَكُمْ لَشَتَّىٰ

inna saʿyakum lashatt

As for him who gives to charity and maintains righteousness.

فَأَمَّا مَنْ أَعْطَىٰ وَٱتَّقَىٰ

fa-ammā man aʿṭā wa-ittaq

And upholds the scripture.

وَصَدَّقَ بِٱلْحُسْنَىٰ

waṣaddaqa bil-ḥus'n

We will direct him towards happiness.

فَسَنُيَسِّرُهُۥ لِلْيُسْرَىٰ

fasanuyassiruhu lil'yus'r

But he who is stingy, though he is rich.

وَأَمَّا مَنۢ بَخِلَ وَٱسْتَغْنَىٰ

wa-ammā man bakhila wa-is'taghn

And disbelieves in the scripture.

وَكَذَّبَ بِٱلْحُسْنَىٰ

wakadhaba bil-ḥus'n

We will direct him towards misery.

فَسَنُيَسِّرُهُۥ لِلْعُسْرَىٰ

fasanuyassiruhu lil'ʿus'r

His money cannot help him when he falls.

وَمَا يُغْنِى عَنْهُ مَالُهُۥٓ إِذَا تَرَدَّىٰٓ

wamā yugh'nī ʿanhu māluhu idhā taradd

We provide the guidance.

إِنَّ عَلَيْنَا لَلْهُدَىٰ

inna ʿalaynā lalhud

We control the Hereafter, as well as this life.

وَإِنَّ لَنَا لَلْءَاخِرَةَ وَٱلْأُولَىٰ

wa-inna lanā lalākhirata wal-ūl

I have warned you about the blazing Hellfire.

فَأَنذَرْتُكُمْ نَارًا تَلَظَّىٰ

fa-andhartukum nāran talaẓẓ

None burns therein except the wicked.

لَا يَصْلَىٰهَآ إِلَّا ٱلْأَشْقَى

lā yaṣlāhā illā l-ashq

Who disbelieves and turns away.

ٱلَّذِى كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ

alladhī kadhaba watawall

Avoiding it will be the righteous.

وَسَيُجَنَّبُهَا ٱلْأَتْقَى

wasayujannabuhā l-atq

Who gives from his money to charity.

ٱلَّذِى يُؤْتِى مَالَهُۥ يَتَزَكَّىٰ

alladhī yu'tī mālahu yatazakk

Seeking nothing in return.

وَمَا لِأَحَدٍ عِندَهُۥ مِن نِّعْمَةٍ تُجْزَىٰٓ

wamā li-aḥadin ʿindahu min niʿ'matin tuj'z

Seeking only his Lord, the Most High.

إِلَّا ٱبْتِغَآءَ وَجْهِ رَبِّهِ ٱلْأَعْلَىٰ

illā ib'tighāa wajhi rabbihi l-aʿl

He will certainly attain salvation.

وَلَسَوْفَ يَرْضَىٰ

walasawfa yarḍ
